While most B2 materials are brittle, a new class of B2 (rare-earth) intermetallic compounds is observed to have large ductility. We analytically derive a necessary condition for ductility (dislocation motion) involving 111 versus 001 slip and the relative stability of various planar defects that must form. We present a sufficient condition for antiphase boundary bistability on {1 ¯ 10} and {11 ¯ 2} planes that allows multiple slip systems. From these energy-based criteria, we construct two stability maps for B2 ductility that use only dimensionless ratios of elastic constants and defect energies, calculated via density functional theory. These two conditions fully explain and predict enhanced ductility (or lack thereof) for B2 systems. In the 23 systems studied, the ductility of YAg, ScAg, ScAu, and ScPd, ductile-to-brittle crossover for other rare-earth B2 compounds, and brittleness of all classic B2 alloys and ionic compounds are correctly predicted.

New intrinsic mechanism on gum-like superelasticity of multifunctional alloys

Ti-Nb-based Gum Metals exhibit extraordinary superelasticity with ultralow elastic modulus, superior strength and ductility, and a peculiar dislocation-free deformation behavior, most of which challenge existing theories of crystal strength. Additionally, this kind of alloys actually displays even more anomalous mechanical properties, such as the non-linear superelastic behavior, accompanied by...

Ru/Al Multilayers Integrate Maximum Energy Density and Ductility for Reactive Materials.

Established and already commercialized energetic materials, such as those based on Ni/Al for joining, lack the adequate combination of high energy density and ductile reaction products. To join components, this combination is required for mechanically reliable bonds. In addition to the improvement of existing technologies, expansion into new fields of application can also be anticipated which t...

Microstructural percolation assisted breakthrough of trade-off between strength and ductility in CuZr-based metallic glass composites

As two important mechanical properties, strength and ductility generally tend to be muturally exclusive in conventional engineering materials. The breakthrough of such a trade-off has been potentiated by the recently developed CuZr-based bulk metallic glass (BMG) composites ductilized by a shape memory CuZr(B2) phase. Here the microstructural dependences of tensile properties for the CuZr-based...

Strengthening materials by engineering coherent internal boundaries at the nanoscale.

Strengthening materials traditionally involves the controlled creation of internal defects and boundaries so as to obstruct dislocation motion. Such strategies invariably compromise ductility, the ability of the material to deform, stretch, or change shape permanently without breaking. Here, we outline an approach to optimize strength and ductility by identifying three essential structural char...

Dislocations and deformation microstructure in a B2-ordered Al28Co20Cr11Fe15Ni26 high-entropy alloy

High-entropy alloys are multicomponent metallic materials currently attracting high research interest. They display a unique combination of chemical disorder and crystalline long-range order, and due to their attractive properties are promising candidates for technological application. Many high-entropy alloys possess surprisingly high strength, occasionally in combination with high ductility a...
